Trinity River fishing 🎣 Report 1/21/2026
Trinity River fishing report (Northern California) — focused especially on steelhead conditions (as of early 2026):
🎣
Current Conditions
Justin Thompson report’s increased flows due to recent rains, meaning higher water but still fishable conditions for steelhead — especially in deeper runs and tailouts. Higher flows tend to encourage fresh fish to move in.
There have been more wild steelhead showing up recently, in addition to hatchery fish, which can make for some exciting action.
The river temperature and flow are key to success — too much runoff and it can push fish into calmer holding water.

Steelhead Bite & Technique
January–February is prime winter steelhead season on the Trinity. Many anglers are still connecting with chrome-steelhead when the river stays in shape.
Typical approaches that are working well right now include:
Pulling plugs like hot shots and mag lips in blk, gold or silver
Nymphing with indicators in deeper holes and seams
Egg patterns and roe rigs remain popular when fish are actively moving.

Where the Fish Are
The Upper Trinity (below Lewiston Dam) continues to be a top target with consistent cold water and stable flows, supporting both resident trout and steelhead fishing.
Middle and lower sections from Steel Bridge down to Hoopa also produce fish, with good holding water around structure and classic runs.
