Shasta lake/Sacramento River fishing 🎣 Report
As of late May 2025, Shasta Lake is experiencing an excellent king salmon bite, I have been having quick limits and strong fish action. The lake’s water levels are high, providing ideal conditions for salmon fishing. This uptick in activity is expected to continue into June and July, which are typically peak months for king salmon fishing on Shasta Lake.
🎣 Fishing Conditions & Techniques
King salmon are currently found in deeper waters, ranging from 80 to 140 feet. Utilizing downriggers or Divers is recommended to effectively reach these depths. Trolling with dodger/flasher setups paired with Brad’s cut plugs, super baits, or large plug-cut anchovies has proven successful. Early mornings are generally the most productive times for fishing, we are having a good bite window from 10:00 AM to noon also.
Justin Thompson Fishing suggests that king salmon are often found in waters between 48°F and 52°F. They typically inhabit deeper, cooler waters, especially near the Shasta Dam and the Dry Creek arm. Effective trolling gear includes dodger/flasher combos with squid hoochies or small spoons, trolled at speeds of 1.8–2.2 mph. Leader lengths should be adjusted based on the gear used to ensure optimal action.
🐟 Species Overview
While king salmon are the primary target, we are also catching rainbow and brown trout, with some bass . Trout are generally located between 10–30 feet deep in the lake, and as the season progresses, they may move deeper into the thermocline, which varies from 60–130 feet.
📅 What to Expect in June–July
As the lake warms and shad become more abundant, king salmon will likely become more active and easier to locate. This is an excellent time to book a guided fishing trip, as the fishing conditions are expected to improve.
